Avoid Giving Your Dog These Poisonous Foods!

Rover-Resort

It’s hard to say no to that cute furry face when your pet is asking you for some of your food, but knowing which foods you can and can’t give your pup is very important to their health. Although dogs will pretty much eat anything you give them, avoid giving them these poisonous foods that are common in most households:

  • Avocados: We have to start with a millennial favorite - avocados. These delicious foods can actually be very dangerous to dogs. They contain persin, a fungicidal toxin that can cause vomiting and diarrhea in dogs.
  • Chocolate: Although a human favorite, chocolate can cause serious illness in pups. Chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine, which cannot be digested in a dog’s system the way it can in a human’s. Darker chocolates contain higher levels of theobromine and are much more dangerous to dogs. The amount of chocolate a dog can swallow before it becomes serious varies based on the size, breed, and age of the dog. If your pup swallows a significant amount of chocolate, you should see a veterinarian as soon as possible.
  • Xylitol: Xylitol is used as a sugar substitute due to its lower calorie composition and is extremely toxic to dogs. It can cause low blood sugar and can even be life threatening. Even as little as 50mg of xylitol can cause liver failure. If your pup has ingested xylitol, visit a veterinarian immediately.

Alcohol: Although most people know that alcohol is dangerous to dogs, you should be careful not to leave any alcohol around the house where your dog can reach it. A small dog can become intoxicated by ingesting just a little bit of alcohol. Signs of intoxication include disorientation, vomiting, excessive panting, restlessness, and even seizures.
